A Sweet Gowanus Renovation

If you haven’t yet jumped aboard the wooden house train, hopefully this one will convince you. Earlier in the week we received an email from a wonderful couple who – yay! – recently purchased a house on 11th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues in Gowanus. I am familiar with and love this eclectic little block (I’ve never written about this one, but have covered adjacent blocks here and here).

The c. 1940 tax photo above is clearly channeling Webster Place, but like so many other little gems like this, it wound up with the aluminum treatment.

photonowThis before-and-after is priceless, right? I’m just dying to get my hands on all the tax photos for this and other similar-looking wooden houses throughout Brooklyn, of which there are many! Like most in Gowanus, this house was built to house laborers. What I love most about the tax photo is that is shows the care that went into building even modest houses like this. Subtle yet beautiful details make it just charming enough!

Lindsay and Brad have been documenting their renovation trials and tribulations on their blog Gowanus Renovation, which I’ve already spent way too much time reading through. It’s an interesting (and at times funny) resource for anyone tackling a fixer-upper project, and I’m already in love with this wonderful twosome — the perfect Wooden House Project couple! I’m excited to keep up with their work and see the finished product.

For more on this area, check out theSweeten to read about another fantastic couple renovating a little wooden house one block over on 10th Street.

Readers: If you own a wooden house and are chronicling your renovation online, let us know!
